🗝️ Key takeaways

  • I love that it's a little sweeter and less tequila-forward than the traditional tequila sunrise cocktail recipe.
  • Although I consider this a summer cocktail I have to say that in the depths of winter, on a really dreary day, I have been know to treat myself to a little tropical get-away in the form of this cocktail and a 1960s bikini movie.
  • Real grenadine is 100 times better than the fake stuff you get in the grocery store. Take the time to look for the real stuff and check the ingredients.

A mango tequila sunrise is a little sweeter and less tangy than the traditional cocktail but every bit as pretty!

It's a delicious choice for brunch unless you prefer something light. Then you might like this Tiffany Blue Sparkler.

🧾 Ingredients

This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the green recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.

🤫 Cook's secrets -

If you want to make this a yummy, alcohol-free drink, you can make it with just the orange juice and grenadine with maybe a little club soda for sparkle.

🥫 How to store leftovers

If you are making these mango tequila sunrise cocktails ahead of time you can store them in a covered pitcher in the refrigerator. They'll be fine for a day or two.

Or, make them individually and put them in Mason jars with twist-on lids. Keep them in the fridge. Then, the day of your party, just put the jars in a tub of ice, and guests can serve themselves

Marye's Tip

The colors will stay more clear and bright if you use a silver tequila/ tequila blanco.

💭 Things to know

  1. This is a simple drink - basically mango and orange juice, tequila, and grenadine. Because it is so simple it's vital that you use really good tequila.
  2. Not all grenadine is equal! Find some real grenadine made from pomegranate juice.
  3. Feel free to add more juice if you like. I tend to like a less "boozy" drink so I usually add more juice.
  4. The trick to the gorgeous color is to shake your tequila and orange-mango juice with the ice and add it to the glass then slowly pour the grenadine down the side. It will sink to the bottom and slowly mix with the orange. That's what gives this Tequila Sunrise recipe its beautiful color.
  5. Use tall narrow (highball) glasses for the prettiest presentation.
  6. I like to serve this cocktail in a Mason jar. It looks rustic and it shows off the pretty colors, too!
  7. Add a splash of club soda to lighten the drink up and give it some bubbles.

👩‍🍳 FAQs

Have other questions? Ask me in the comments!

What is grenadine?

Grenadine was originally made with pomegranate juice, sugar, and water but is now often made with black currant juice. Be sure to check the ingredients. Currently, the inexpensive grenadine is made with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), water, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, FD&C Red #40, natural and artificial flavors, and FD&C Blue #1. Ick.

What goes into a tequila sunrise?

A bare bones tequila sunrise is made with tequila, orange juice, and grenadine.

📞 The last word

This is a cocktail with a Caribbean flare -- kind of what you'd find on a cruise or be served when you're reclined on a chaise on the beach.

You know, something like the Blue Hawaiian or the frozen banana daiquiri.

It's not like this cocktail is going to make you think you are actually in the Caribbean (unless of course you drink gallons of it) but it may help you think happy, sunny thoughts on a cold, slushy afternoon.

If you click on the number of servings in the recipe card you can adjust the measurements up or down for the exact number of servings you need.

I love simple drinks and this one is gorgeous. I love how you garnished it! I have a feeling if I drink a few of these I would definitely be thinking I was in the Caribbean! As long as I don't go strutting my stuff in a bikini in the front yard during these frigid months, I'm good with thinking I'm in the Caribbean. lol
