🗝️ Key takeaways

  • Creamy, sweet, and full of tropical flavor. This Blue Hawaiian cocktail recipe has tangy sweetness from pineapple and smooth creaminess from the coconut cream!
  • So stinkin' easy to make! It's just a blend of 4 ingredients and some ice.
  • I love this all summer long. It's perfect for summer cookouts and get-togethers, long evenings on the porch slapping mosquitos and watching fireflies, and serving by the pool (if you're lucky enough to have one).
  • You can use Triple Sec in place of the Blue Curacao but you'll need to add food color to make it blue.

The pretty blue color gives the blue Hawaiian cocktail a feeling of being on a tropical island.

It's the on of the tropical drinks that evokes feelings of relaxation (especially after 2 or 3!). I always imagine myself on a white sand beach with warm breezes, the slap of the waves, and this tropical drink in hand.

Ah, if only.

I think it's the perfect cocktail for kicking back and watching a 1960s Bikini movie on Netflix when it's cold and rainy outside - or too hot to set foot outside the door.

If you're looking for a classic cocktail you may like this whiskey sour.

📖 Blue Hawaiian Cocktail Variations

  1. Try using coconut rum or pineapple rum.
  2. Try it with silver tequila or vodka.
  3. Use unsweetened coconut milk or coconut cream instead of Coco Lopez to make it less sweet.
  4. Blend it with ice so it's frozen and slushy.
  5. Make this a non-alcoholic mocktail by leaving out the rum and blue curacao. Use blue curacao syrup, which is non-alcoholic. One brand that makes it is Torani and you can find it on Amazon.
  6. Leave the coconut cream out and use coconut water or cream soda for a lighter drink.

🤫 Cook's secrets -

Have non-drinkers or kids at the party? No problem! Make this a non-alcoholic mocktail by leaving out the rum and blue curacao. Use blue curacao syrup, which is non-alcoholic. One brand that makes it is Torani and you can find it on Amazon. You could also use blue Gatoraide or Koolaid.

🍴 Equipment

  1. jigger for measuring
  2. blender
  3. hurricane glasses or margarita glasses

🥫 How to store leftover blue Hawaiian cocktail

Since you generally make these tropical drinks one at a time you won't often have leftovers. Here's how to store them just in case you do.

  • Any leftover creme of coconut will need to be refrigerated.
  • If you make this in a pitcher pour leftovers into airtight containers (a Mason jar with a twist on cap is great) and keep refrigerated. You'll need to shake it up before serving again.

Marye's Tip

Changing the flavors of the rum will change the flavor of the cocktail so don't be afraid to experiment with different flavors from spiced rum to coconut or pineapple rum!

💭 Things to know

  1. A pineapple wedge and/or maraschino cherries are the most common garnish.
  2. It's fun to stick a cocktail umbrella in the top when serving these pretty tiki drinks.
  3. Try to use a white rum - darker rums will give it a greenish color - which is still a pretty gorgeous drink but maybe not what you are looking for. Just be aware.
  4. Adjust the serving size in the recipe card up to get the instructions for making it by the pitcher.

👩‍🍳 FAQs

What's the difference between a Blue Hawaiian and a Blue Hawaii cocktail?

The Blue Hawaiian cocktail is creamy and sweet while the Blue Hawaii is clear, not creamy, and is made with sour mix.

What can I substitute for Blue Curacao?

You can use Triple Sec in place of the Blue Curacao but you'll need to add food color to make it blue.

I don't have rum! What can I use instead?

I've used silver tequila or vodka in place of the rum.

What is the difference between a pina colada and a Blue Hawaiian recipe?

They taste almost the same! Both contain rum, pineapple, and cream of coconut (Coco Loco or Coco Lopez). Besides the color, the only difference is that there's some blue curaçao liqueur (blue liqueur with orange flavor) that gives the blue Hawaiian drink its gorgeous color.

📞 The last word

Be careful with these. A Blue Hawaiian cocktail is one of those drinks that you can drink all night without thinking about it and when you stand up the universe tilts.

They do pack a punch so sip slow and snack while you are drinking. The most used garnish is a pineapple slice but I really like just sugaring the rim with blue sugar crystals - it's beautiful and I like the texture when I drink from the glass.

If you like Pina Coladas then you will probably like this because, while it doesn't taste exactly the same, it does have a lot of similarities.

If you click on the number of servings in the recipe card you can adjust the measurements up or down for the exact number of servings you need. Adjust all the way up for a pitcher drink.
