🔪 Instructions

This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the green recipe card at the bottom of the page.

All of the ingredients in a bowl ready to mix.

Mix all of the ingredients together and store in a Mason jar or other airtight container.

🥫 Storage

Tony Chachere's world-famous seasoning is shelf-stable, and so is this copycat recipe!

Storing it is practically effortless.

If you have misplaced the lid of your Mason jar, be sure to cover it tightly with plastic to preserve the flavors in your homemade spice blend.

Store the copycat spice mix in a cool, dark place. Your pantry or kitchen storage cabinets work perfectly.

This easy seasoning recipe will keep for about six months, as long as the ground spices that you used are relatively fresh.

📖 Variations

Since this is a copycat recipe of Tony Chachere's Original Creole Seasoning, any variations will make it taste less like the classic. However, that doesn't mean you can't get a little bit creative with it!

  • You can use regular chili powder from the store, but I recommend making it yourself. The smoky, spicy flavor is unlike anything else!
  • If you don't love the flavor of garlic or prefer to cook with it fresh, try subbing onion powder in its place.
  • Add another teaspoon of cayenne pepper if your family likes it spicy.
  • Prefer a smoky flavor? Stir in a pinch of smoked paprika.
  • Thyme and parsley are popular in Cajun seasoning blends (though they aren't featured in Tony Chachere's). However, if you like dried herbs, they make a tasty addition to creole dishes. Add a tablespoon of each.
  • You can use table salt for smaller grains of salt. Just use ¼ cup plus 2 teaspoons of table salt in place of ⅓ cup kosher salt.

💭 Things to know

Expert Tip: You can buy reusable shaker-style lids made specially to fit Mason jars. Then, it's even easier to season your favorite recipes!

  • Copycat Tony Chacheres enhances the flavor of meats, such as chicken, beef, pork, fish, and seafood. Sprinkle it on after cooking, or use a few teaspoons in breading or batter!
  • Keep away from sunlight in a dry place.
  • Use this seasoning to add a Creole twist to your favorite side dishes. It's great on baked potatoes, french fries, potato salad, homemade garlic bread, baked beans, steamed veggies, and more.
  • Stir a few teaspoons with a quarter-cup of mayo and a quarter-cup of ketchup to make a quick and tasty Creole-inspired dipping sauce.
  • A small dash of spice goes a long way—just like when cooking with salt and pepper.
  • Use fresh spices to make your copycat Creole seasoning last longer.
  • Ground spices lose fragrance and flavor as they sit. Chances are, if the spices don't smell fragrant anymore, they've likely lost flavor, too.
  • Mason jar foods are great for gifting. Wrap 'em with a big ribbon and give them away to all of your spice-lovin' friends.

👩‍🍳 FAQs

What does Tony Chachere's Creole Original Seasoning taste like?

It's full of fun flavors that make any normal dish taste like a Cajun recipe. It's mostly salt, enhanced with chili, garlic, and peppers. The flavor is balanced and a good substitute for regular salt and pepper.

How do I use this seasoning?

There are sooo many ways—it's a versatile addition to any meal! Sprinkle it on top of Alfredo pasta. Use it in the breading for fried chicken. Season a simple salad. Sprinkle it over buttered veggies or corn on the cob. The list goes on, and on. Use it anytime you'd normally use salt and pepper for a little extra flavor.

How much seasoning do I use on meat?

A good rule of thumb is to sprinkle on about as much copycat Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning as you would normally salt and pepper. When following a recipe, replace the regular salt with this in an equal measurement.

Is this recipe spicy?

No, it's not. As long as you follow the measurements closely, you'll only get a slight, subtle heat—nothing that'll make your eyes water or your tongue tingle.
