  1. Place the seasoned chicken in the bottom of the crockpot.
  2. Whisk the ingredients for the sauce.
  3. Cook the sauce-covered chicken on low for 8 hours.
  4. Shred with two forks.

Before you store your slow cooker chicken, make sure it cools to room temperature. Then, place it in an airtight container where it will stay fresh in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Root beer chicken freezes like a charm, too!

Place your chicken in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you're ready to serve, just be sure to let it thaw in the fridge overnight first.

Can I use frozen chicken?

I don't recommend it. Frozen chicken will take much longer to fully cook, resulting in tough meat and too much liquid.

Do I have to use root beer?

I haven't tested this recipe with any other sodas, but it should work just fine! I suggest sticking with a dark-colored option like Coke or Dr Pepper.

Can I use pork instead of chicken?

Yes! Pork will have a slightly different flavor but will still be super tasty. You might want to try these crockpot honey garlic pork chops, too.

Equipment Needed

  • Slow Cooker

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, or thighs
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1 cup root beer, not sugar-free
  • 1 cup bbq sauce

Instructions

  • Spray the inside of a crockpot with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Season the chicken with the seasoned salt and place in the bottom of the crock.
  • Mix the root beer and bbq sauce together in a medium sized bowl with a whisk until smooth and well blended.
  • Pour the root beer mixture over the chicken.
  • Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.
  • Shred with 2 forks and put the cover back on. Cook for an additional 30 minutes.
  • *Serve on hamburger buns or spooned over mashed potatoes.
