🗝️ Key takeaways

  • Easy recipe for "The Nightmare Before Christmas" fans and they're so darn cute!
  • Perfect for Halloween or Christmas class parties AND bake sales! Great way to add spookiness to a Halloween party dessert table.
  • Learn the perfect consistency for completely smooth dipping. All ages can enjoy helping decorate the tasty treats.

Jack Skellington Oreo Pops are a fun way to celebrate the Halloween season and are simple enough to whip up for family movie night, too.

Cookie pops make great party favors and class treats that—as the Pumpkin King himself would say—will really make them scream!

🧾 Ingredients

This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the green recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.

Labeled ingredients for Oreo pops.

📖 Variations

  • Use any flavor of Oreo Cookies, but they must be the doubled-stuffed kind. You can usually find double-stuffed traditional and Golden Oreos.
  • Instead of white candy melts, feel free to use melted white chocolate chips or almond bark for dipping.
  • Jack Skellington Oreos look the most realistic with his signature bat bow tie, but you could skip that step and opt for some black ribbon.
  • For Jack's eyes, feel free to make your own royal icing, buy it pre-made, or swap it for melted dark chocolate chips.

🔪 Instructions

This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the green recipe card at the bottom of the page.

Push Lollipop Sticks in Oreos

Adding the lollipop sticks to the Oreo pops.
  1. Gently push the lollipop sticks into the cream of the Oreos. Be careful not to separate the cookie halves.
  2. If you have time chill them for 15 minutes or so.

Stir coconut oil into melted Candy Melts

Coconut oil being stirred into melted candy melts.
  1. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the candy melts according to the package directions.
  2. Mix coconut oil into the melted chocolate until smooth.

Dip Oreos into Candy Melts

Dipping Oreos in the melted white candy melt mixture.
  1. Dip each cookie into the melted chocolate, covering the entire Oreo.
  2. Let any excess chocolate drip back into the bowl.
  3. Lay each cookie onto a wax paper-lined cookie sheet.
  4. Once finished, chill in the refrigerator until set, about ten minutes.
  5. Push a festive paper straw over each lollipop stick.

Draw mouth

Drawing the mouth on the chocolate covered Oreos.
  1. Use an edible marker to draw Jack's creepy smile.
  2. Then, add lines to create the "stitches."
  3. Make the chocolate bats by melting chocolate and using the bat candy molds.

Add eyes

Adding the eyes with black royal icing.
  1. Use the royal icing to create big eyes and two small nostrils.
  2. Finish Jack Skellington's face by piping the black icing over the line of his smile (leave the stitch lines as they are.)

Attach bats

Attach chocolate bats to straw.
  1. Apply a dot of icing (like glue) to the straw under Jack's face.
  2. Press a chocolate bat onto the icing.

Let icing set

Attaching chocolate bats to finished Oreo pops.
  1. Let the icing set at room temperature for an hour or two.
  2. Wrap with cellophane or plastic wrap if desired.

🥫 How to store leftovers

Enjoy these easy Halloween treats all month long. Jack Skellington Oreo Pops keep well if you want to make them in advance.

Seal the leftover cookie pops in an airtight container and leave them at room temperature. They'll keep for about two weeks, but I don't recommend stacking them on top of each other.

Don't refrigerate or freeze. The black food coloring in the icing will get smeary.

💭 Things to know

Expert Tip: Add the coconut oil slowly, stirring to test the consistency—you may not need to use all of it. Plus, it's easier to add more later than to fix candy melts that are too oily.

  • If the marker seems dry or is running out of ink, touch its tip to a wet paper towel. This'll rehydrate it, and you'll get more bang for your buck.
  • You can generally find paper straws, royal icing, and all of the other decorating goodies in the cake section of the grocery store.
  • DIY a "piping tip" by snipping off a small corner of a plastic baggie. Fill the bag with royal icing or chocolate, and you're good to go!
  • Use black paste food coloring. Gel or liquid will thin it out too much.
  • Feel free to get creative with some facial expressions. They don't all have to be smiley, of course.
  • Show off your spooky sweets by filling a glass bowl or mason jar with sprinkles, candy, crinkle paper, or other colorful objects. Then, the Oreo pops can stand as a festive display!
  • If you don't want to make the bat chocolates for the "bow" you can just tie a black satin ribbon bow around the straw -- but it's not as authentic!

👩‍🍳 FAQs

Who is Jack Skellington?

Jack Skellington, otherwise known as the Pumpkin King, is the main character of the wildly famous Halloween-themed stop-motion movie, A Nightmare Before Christmas. (Despite its name, the director confirmed: it is a Halloween movie!)

My candy melts are getting thick—help!

If you let the melted chocolate sit for too long, it'll start to set. No worries! Simply reheat it according to the initial directions. However, keep in mind, you've used up some of the chocolate. So, what's remaining won't take as long to melt as it did the first time.

How do I make chocolate-dipped Oreos without sticks?

If you don't want to make Oreo pops, simply leave out the sticks. I've found it's easiest to slide the prongs of a fork into the Oreo cream so that your fingers don't get as messy.

Can I use this method, but with cake pops instead?

Sure, that's a good idea. Use this recipe to make yummy Red Velvet Jack Skellington Cake Pops. They're already white, so it's the perfect base for the Pumpkin King's face. (Plus, the red color inside is spoo-o-oky!)
