I happened to find black jalapenos on Amazon Fresh. They're really a super dark green but are perfect for these Halloween mummy jalapeno poppers!
🔪 Instructions
This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the green recipe card at the bottom of the page.

- In a small bowl, combine the cheeses and seasoning.
- Fill each jalapeño half with the cheese mixture.
- Wrap jalapenos with thin strips of the crescent dough.
- Bake, then add candy eyeballs while warm.
🥫 Storage
Mummy jalapeno poppers are best served warm as soon as they come out of the oven. That's when the pastry dough is light and flaky, the pepper crisp-tender, and the cheese ultra gooey.
I'm drooling just thinking about it.
However, if you happen to have a few leftover, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for two or three days. Rewarm in an oven heated to 300 degrees F. I don't recommend freezing the leftovers (not that there will be many leftovers, anyway. Take that from experience!)

📖 Variations
- Add Some Meat: If someone doesn't like jalapeño peppers (blasphemy!) buy a few mini hot dogs and extra crescent roll dough. Slice the dogs in half lengthwise so you can smooth a little bit of the cheese on the flat side. Then, wrap a few dogs in the same manner as the peppers. "Mummy dogs" make a great pairing with the Mummy poppers!
- Monterey Jack Swaps: You can use pepper jack cheese, cheddar cheese, or another favorite Mexican blend.
- Optional Flavor Mix-Ins: To your creamy cheese filling, consider adding chopped green onion, some garlic powder, cooked bacon bits, or even chopped chipotle peppers if you like things re-e-e-ally spicy.
- Edible Eyes: If you can't find candy googly eyes, you could use some black olive slices to create a similar spooky effect.
💭 Things to know
Expert Tip: The oil from the pepper can stick around for a while and hurt! To prevent your hands from burning while cutting the jalapenos, wear a rubber glove on your pepper-handling hand! And, whatever you do, don't touch your face, your eyes, your kid's face, your pet... well, you get the point.
- Lining your baking sheet with parchment paper helps the poppers release easily, and makes cleaning up a breeze. Just as a reminder, you cannot swap parchment paper with wax paper. While parchment is oven safe to a certain temperature, wax paper is not heat-safe at all. If you don't have parchment paper, you can grease a foil-lined baking sheet with cooking spray.
- Don't overstuff the jalapeño halves with the cream cheese mixture. Otherwise, as the cheese heats and bubbles, it can leak out of the wrapping.
- I find that the Pillsbury Crescent Roll Sheets work best but crescent rolls will work, too.
- Use a pizza cutter to quickly and easily slice long pieces of dough.
- Keep the dough cold while working with it.
- Brush the Halloween jalapeño mummies with an egg wash to give them a gorgeous, golden brown shine. However, try not to let the egg wash pool around the bottom of the peppers, as it can get crispy and even burn.
- Once they're done, add the mummies to the Halloween appetizer table quickly - they're best hot.
👩🍳 FAQs
You can get away with it, but be aware that puff pastry tends to puff (shocker) more than the crescent roll dough. As a result, your dough may bake together a little more and lose the mummy-wrapping effect. To avoid this, if you do use puff pastry, cut the dough strips quite thin.
Sure! This fun Halloween recipe is written to be super easy, but if you want to make it homemade, who am I to stop ya? Try to stick with a recipe that doesn't puff too much, though, to maintain the proper "look" of the mummy poppers.
You can easily find them online! If shopping in person, look for the Halloween foods section at a party or holiday store.
Sure! You can prepare them as directed, just hold off on the egg wash until just before baking. Cover the pan with foil and refrigerate assembled jalapeno mummies for up to two days.
I'd actually recommend this method if you're taking the mummies to a friend's house. Bake them once you arrive at the party, as close to serving time as possible.

I'm thinking for those that don't like the heat from the jalapenos some of those sweet little baby bell peppers would work...and the colors would tie-in to the fall season, at least.
