🎥 Watch and cook: step-by-step video tutorial
There are two kinds of people in this world: those who love Crockpot Smothered Chicken and those who haven’t tried it yet. If you’re looking for a dinner that practically cooks itself while you go about your day, congratulations—you’ve just found your new best friend.
This dish is all about juicy, fall-apart chicken drowning in a creamy, savory gravy that tastes like it took hours of effort (spoiler: it didn’t). Toss everything in the slow cooker, walk away, and come back to a meal that smells like Southern magic. Serve it over mashed potatoes, rice, or straight from the spoon—no judgment here, y'all. If you love comfort food with zero stress, this one’s about to be on repeat.
Creamy, rich, ridiculously delicious…this is the recipe to keep in your back pocket for cozy weeknights, picky eaters, and days that just need gravy.
🧾 Ingredients & Substitutions
Try using skinless chicken thighs instead of breasts for a different, less expensive option. I like to shred chicken and then serve it over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, mashed cauliflower, or white rice for an easy, busy day meal.
For a little extra flavor, you can add garlic powder, black pepper, or your favorite spices and herb seasonings to the chicken before cooking. Creole seasoning would add a spicy and deep flavor to this crock pot chicken recipe.
Like more richness? Add some cream cheese to the gravy for a richer flavor. Or, use heavy cream in place of part of the chicken stock.
🔪 How to make crockpot smothered chicken.
Place chicken breasts in the bottom, of the crock pot, and then top with the sliced onions.
Mix together the cream of soups and the onion soup mix until smooth, then stir in the chicken broth.
Spoon the soup mixture over the chicken.
Top with the sliced mushrooms, and then cook on low heat for 8 hours.

- 2 ¼ pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, or thighs
- 10.5 ounces cream of mushroom soup
- 10.5 ounces cream of chicken soup
- 8 ounces button mushrooms, sliced
- 8 ounces onion, cut in half then sliced
- 1 ounce onion soup mix
- ½ cup chicken stock
- 1 teaspoon seasoning salt
Instructions
- Spray the inside of the crock with no stick spray.
- Lay the chicken in the bottom of the crock.
- Sprinkle with the seasoned salt.
- Cover with the onions.
- Mix the soups and the onion soup mix until smooth.
- Stir in the chicken stock.
- Spoon over the chicken.
- Top with sliced mushrooms.
- Set the crockpot on low and cook for 8 hours.
Notes
- If you're using frozen chicken breasts there's no need to thaw first - just add an hour or so to the cooking time and make sure they are cooked to 165F when measured with an instant read thermometer.
- Make a thicker gravy by whisking together 2 tablespoons of flour with ¼ cup of cold water, and then adding it to the crock pot during the last hour of cooking.
- If you don't have any onion soup mix on hand, you can use ½ cup of chopped onion and 2 beef bouillon cubes.

💭 Insider tips: things to know
- Make a thick gravy by whisking together 2 tablespoons of flour with ¼ cup of cold water, and then adding it to the crock pot during the last hour of cooking.
- You can also double this recipe and freeze half for another time. Just place all of the ingredients in freezer bags, and then thaw and cook when you're ready to eat.
- Fresh mushrooms really work best in this recipe. But, you can add drained canned mushrooms in a pinch.

This looks so good! Making this over the weekend as it will be ridiculously hot here in West TN and I sure don’t want to turn on the oven. Thanks for posting this one.

Made this yesterday for dinner. Unfortunately my husband and I treated ourselves to milkshakes around 1:00 and were still too full to have our slow-cooker dinner when it was time!! I did taste it though and it’s DELICIOUS!! Can’t wait for dinner tonight!!

Delicious and easy to make. I didn’t have the o
Onion soup mix so I used the suggestion of beef bouillon and minced onion. I also added cream cheese as another suggestion and it was rich and creamy. Thank you!

I am for SURE going to make this however, I can't do pulled meat of any kind. I will cut the chicken into cubes prior to cooking. Pulled meat 'gags' me. Other than that, this looks delish! Thank you for sharing <3

Yummy, easy, & inexpensive!!!
I made a double batch w/extra mushrooms and I think we liked it just as much with either potatoes or rice. Will try noodles or cauliflower with it next time. So yummy! And l love that it pairs well with any veggie!

Made this tonight (served over egg noodles) and it was fantastic! I was nervous when I first turned it on because between the onion soup mix and fresh onions it was smelling very very oniony but Im really so glad I did because the end result is just delicious (and not all that oniony!). Give it a try - you'll love it!
Susan says
Delicious! I added a block of cream cheese and fresh spinach!
Steve says
Did you mean to say chicken broth can be used instead of chicken stock?
Marye says
Yes - I've fixedit.

Yum-YUM! True Comfort food! and, lucky me, I have all the ingredients.
Thanks again, Chef Marye'!
