🥰 Is this slow cooker tomato tortellini soup recipe for you?

  • your family expects comfort food but you want minimal effort
  • you like creamy soups that actually feel filling
  • pasta in soup feels like emotional support, not a side dish
  • you need something weeknight-friendly that still works for Sunday dinner vibes
  • garlic bread for dipping is non-negotiable

If that list felt personal, welcome. You're in the right kitchen.

🧾 Ingredients for this hearty pasta soup

Nothing weird, nothing fussy, just normal ingredients about to overachieve for you.

Ingredients for crockpot creamy tomato tortellini soup including tortellini, tomato soup, diced tomatoes, onion, garlic, cream cheese, and chicken stock on gray surface.
  • Chicken stock - the backbone of the whole operation. Without it, this is just tomato-flavored regret.
  • Condensed tomato soup - the flavor shortcut that does the heavy lifting while you take the credit.
  • Canned diced tomatoes - brings texture, brightness, and proof this soup didn't come from a packet.
  • Garlic - because flavor matters and we're not running a bland kitchen.
  • Onion - quiet workhorse energy. Shows up, does the job, makes everything better.
  • Italian seasoning - the tiny herb blend that convinces people you seasoned on purpose.
  • Tortellini - cheese-filled pasta pillows doing emotional support work.
  • Cream cheese - the reason this soup turns creamy instead of just… tomato water.

Ingredients

  • 32 ounces chicken stock
  • 28 ounces diced tomatoes
  • 4 cloves garlic, diced
  • 1 cup of onion, diced
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 21 ounces cream of tomato soup, two 10.5 ounce cans
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temp, cut into cubes
  • 19 ounces package refrigerated cheese tortellini, uncooked (a little more or less is fine)

Instructions

  • Add chicken broth, tomatoes, garlic, onion, Italian seasoning, and tomato soup to slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on low 6 to 8 hours.
  • Stir in cream cheese and cheese tortellini. Cover and cook on HIGH for 20 minutes, or until tortellini is cooked.

Notes

Storage:
Store leftover soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The tortellini will soften as it sits, so add a splash of broth or cream when reheating to loosen the texture. I don't recommend freezing as this soup can separate.
Tips:
• Add the tortellini at the end of cooking so it stays tender and doesn’t turn mushy.
• Soften the cream cheese first so it melts smoothly into the soup instead of clumping.
• If the soup thickens too much, stir in a splash of broth or milk to loosen it before serving.

🔪 How to make slow cooker tomato tortellini soup

Dump, stir, ignore, eat. You've got this.

Step-by-step images showing how to make crockpot tomato tortellini soup with broth, tomatoes, seasoning, and pasta.
  1. Add tomatoes and tomato soup to the slow cooker
  2. Dump in the stock, garlic, onion, and seasoning.
  3. Stir quick, cover, and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
  4. Add the tortellini and cream cheese. Don't worry if there are some lumps. Cook on high 20 minutes.

😱 What can go wrong (and how to fix it)

🍅 The tortellini turns mushy
It cooked too long. Add it near the end and don't wander off into a four-episode TV spiral.

🍅 The cream cheese won't melt smoothly
Cold cream cheese clumps. Let it soften first or cut it into cubes so it blends instead of staging a protest.

🍅 The soup gets too thick
Tortellini keeps soaking up liquid. Stir in a splash of broth or milk when reheating and it'll come right back to life.

🍅 The flavor tastes flat
It needs salt. Or a pinch more seasoning. Or both. Tomatoes are dramatic like that.

👩🏻‍🍳 FAQs

Can I make this on the stovetop instead?

Absolutely. Simmer the base for about 20-25 minutes, then add the tortellini and cream cheese and cook until tender and creamy.

Can I use frozen tortellini?

Yes. Add it straight from the freezer near the end of cooking. It may need a few extra minutes, but it works just fine.

Can I cook the tortellini the whole time in the slow cooker?

No. It'll turn soft and sad. Add it during the last 20-30 minutes so it stays tender instead of mushy.

🍽 More low effort hearty soup recipes

If this creamy tomato tortellini soup hit the spot, you've got options waiting. My ravioli soup brings that same cozy pasta-in-broth energy but with a slightly heartier, more dinner-table feel, while the creamy crockpot chicken gnocchi soup leans full comfort mode with pillowy gnocchi and a rich, slow-cooked base that practically demands a blanket and a second bowl.

And if you're in the mood for something a little more dramatic, the lasagna soup gives you all the layered Italian comfort without the casserole commitment, and the creamy macaroni and cheese soup is exactly what it sounds like: warm, cheesy, unapologetic comfort food that doesn't pretend to be anything else. Pick your mood, grab a spoon, and keep dinner easy.

🏡 Now, go make dinner - what are you waiting for?
