This easy pigs in a blanket recipe is a must-have appetizer that'll make your family and friends go hog-wild.

🧾 Ingredients

This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the green recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.

The ingredients for Pigs in a Blanket on plates and in bowls.

📖 Variations

  • I prefer to use full-size beef hot dogs. However, you can also use Little Smokies cocktail sausages, chicken sausage, or turkey sausage.
  • Store-bought puff pastry keeps this recipe fast and simple. But you can try making a homemade puff pastry recipe if you’re feeling adventurous!
  • Use your favorite mustard—yellow, Dijon, spicy brown, and honey mustard all work great!
  • If you’re not a fan of mustard, you can leave it out and serve it as a separate dipping sauce for others to enjoy.
  • Create cheesy pigs by adding shredded cheese! Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, and Colby Jack cheese are great options.
  • Sprinkle the layer of mustard with chopped fresh herbs such as thyme, rosemary, or marjoram for more depth and flavor!

🔪 Instructions

This is an overview of the instructions. Full instructions are in the green recipe card at the bottom of the page.

🥫 How to store leftovers

I’ll be shocked if you have leftover pigs in a blanket! But if you do, store them in the fridge in an airtight container for a day or two.

Heat ‘em up a bit in the oven or air fryer at 200 degrees F for a few minutes until they're warm again.

I don’t recommend freezing baked pigs in a blanket because the pastry will get soggy. However, you can freeze them before baking for up to three months!

💭 Things to know

Expert Tip: Don’t skip the chilling steps! The puff pastry dough needs to be cold before being baked so the butter doesn’t leak out and ruin the flaky layers.

  • Roll out each sheet of puff pastry on a clean, lightly floured work surface so it doesn’t stick.
  • Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice the puff pastry. A dull one will tear the dough.
  • You need the egg wash to seal the rolled-up pastry, adhere the bagel seasoning to it, and brown the dough in the oven. Use a pastry brush to evenly spread the egg wash on the dough.
  • Only bake pigs on a parchment-lined baking sheet. The parchment paper prevents the pastry from sticking and burning.
  • Your pigs in a blanket are done baking once the flaky puff pastry turns golden brown.
  • If you need to keep the pigs warm before serving to guests at a party, keep them in an oven set to 200 degrees F or use the "warm" setting.
  • Serve pigs in a blanket with your favorite dipping sauce. Ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, cheese sauce, or ranch dressing are all delicious choices!

👩‍🍳 FAQs

What are the best hot dogs for pigs in a blanket?

Use your favorite hot dogs! I think all-beef hot dogs taste best, but you can also use cocktail sausages and turkey or chicken sausage. Cheese-filled hot dogs are tasty, too!

How do I make everything bagel seasoning mix myself?

It’s so easy to make your own bagel seasoning! Just mix poppy seeds, black and white sesame seeds, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, and coarse sea salt in a small bowl.

Can I make pigs in a blanket a day in advance?

Yep! Tightly wrap your unbaked mini pigs in plastic wrap and refrigerate them until you’re ready to bake. Don’t refrigerate them for more than two days, or the pastry will dry out. Wait to apply the egg wash and seasoning just before baking for the best results.

Can I freeze pigs in a blanket?

Yes! You can freeze unbaked pigs in a blanket for up to 3 months. Tightly wrap each one in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer bag or airtight container to prevent freezer burn. Bake ‘em straight out of the freezer without thawing.

Can I use crescent roll dough or biscuit dough instead of puff pastry?

Yes, you can technically use croissant dough or crescent rolls to make pigs in a blanket, but puff pastry is the star of the recipe here. I don’t recommend using biscuit dough because it’s too dense and doesn’t have the right texture.

How do I bake pigs in a blanket in the air fryer?

Air fryer pigs in a blanket are easy, too! Arrange them in a single layer in your air fryer basket and bake at 400 F for about 25 minutes or until golden brown. You’ll need to do this in batches so they don’t overlap.

🍽️ Serve with...

I love these with jezebel sauce but campfire sauce is good, too.

In addition to dipping sauce, you can take your tasty treats to the next level by serving ‘em with pickle relish, Candied Jalapenos, Pickled Onions, or sauerkraut.
