🥘Shopping list
This basic wine sorbet could not be more simple! You can use any wine you like - I've chosen CK Mondavi & Family's limited edition (2020) spritzed rose moscato. It's light, fresh, and such a pretty color!
Add a little citrus in sweet wines to help balance the flavors but drier wines won't need the citrus - unless you want it.
🔪Instructions
Y'all - this just could not be easier to make. If you don't have an ice cream maker it's ok! I have instructions for making it without one.
- Add sugar to a heavy saucepan.
- Add the water.
- Bring to a boil.
- Let boil until all the sugar crystals are dissolved and the liquid is clear.
- Remove from heat and add the wine.
- Squeeze in the citrus if you are using it.
- Chill in the refrigerator.
- Add to the machine and freeze according to manufacturers instructions. OR follow instructions in the recipe for freezing in your freezer.
- Serve in small servings garnished as you like.
Wine sorbet in your freezer
If you don't have an ice cream freezer you can still make this easy wine sorbet. It won't be quite as smooth but it will still be delicious!
- Follow instructions 1 -7 above.
- Pour the chilled mixture into a rimmed cookie sheet or large sheet pan.
- Freeze completely.
- Remove from the cook sheet and blend in the blender or food processor until smooth.
- Return to the freezer and re-freeze before serving.
💭Tips
Once you know how to make sorbet with wine the possibilities are endless! This recipe is almost effortless.
Here are my expert tips to ensure your success!
- Keep your wine sorbet smooth by making sure all the sugar crystals are dissolved. Take out a spoonful of the liquid and rub it between your fingers. If you feel any grittiness let it simmer a minute or two longer.
- Use any variety of wine you like - or even a combination! Imagine a sangria wine sorbet....mmmmm!
- Make it the day before serving and let it freeze overnight.
- Put the serving dishes in the freezer for a bit before adding the sorbet. It will help it stay frozen.
- Once you've put it in the serving dishes serve it immediately because it will melt fast!
- Adjust the sugar to the sweetness of the wine. Always taste before chilling.
- If you have to add more sugar be sure to bring the liquid to a boil so that the new sugar crystals are completely dissolved.
- This is not a dessert for children. The alcohol does not cook out.
FAQs
Here are the questions I am most frequently asked about this recipe.
Is there any milk in sorbet?
Not at all. Ice cream has milk and/or cream but sorbet is made from water, sugar, and fruit puree or juice. Wine counts as juice, right?
That keeps the flavor fresh and clean, which is why it's often used as a palate cleanser between courses.
Is there alcohol in it?
Sometimes, but not all the time. Sorbet recipes sometimes call for a little alcohol to improve the texture. Of course, since this is a wine sorbet recipe there is definitely alcohol it!
🍷About Spritzed Rose Moscato
When I first saw this rose moscato in the bottle I was smitten with the color but when I tasted it?
I was in love.
Serve it chilled - it's light, refreshing, and not too sweet. There's an unexpected swirl of flavors - for me it was literally rose, grapefruit, and honeysuckle but officially it's strawberry and peach with a crisp, yet creamy, finish.
Here's my favorite part - when the bottle is chilled properly the label turns pink.
