🗝️ Key takeaways: why this recipe is your new favorite

  • Have you seen a cuter dip presentation? I think not! This is easy to make and absolutely adorable.
  • Perfect for princess parties, showers, girls' nights, and Bridgerton watch parties!
  • You can buy a dip, use your own recipe, or use the suggestions below but make sure that it's thick or it will soak through the bread.

🧾 Gather your ingredients: what you'll need

This is an overview of the ingredients. You'll find the full measurements and instructions in the green recipe card (printable) at the bottom of the page.

Keep in mind, you can also make your own bread bowl!

Equipment and ingredients for the royal coach bread bowl.

🔪 Step-by-step guide: instructions for success

This dip in a bread bowl is so cute, but it's also so easy to make-it only takes a few minutes.

Step 1: Hollow out the boule

The night before you will serve the dip slice a thin layer off of the top of the boule. Keep it in as much of a round shape as possible. Carefully pull out chunks of bread, leaving at least a 1-inch border of bread around the whole thing.

Step 2: Cut out the wheels

Toast the slices of bread. Use a circle cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut out circles for the wheels.

Step 3: Cut out the hubs

Use a smaller circle cutter to cut out the hubs for the wheels.

Step 4: Assemble wheels

Use toothpicks to attach the smaller circles to the center of the larger circles.

Step 5: Add wheels to carriage

Poke the toothpicks with the wheel assembly on it into the bread round. Put 2 on each side.

Step 6: Add horses and reins

Tie the twine to the horses' necks and lay the ends into the bread boule. Fill with your favorite dip - suggestions below!

🤫 Marye's secret for zhuzhing it up -

If you want to go "all out" you can use food coloring spray paint to paint the hubs gold or silver.

zhuzh: verb. To make something more interesting or attractive

🍴Must have tools: essential equipment

  1. Sharp knife
  2. Scissors
  3. Round cookie cutters in 2 sizes

Marye's Tip o' the day

Letting the bread bowl sit overnight before making the coach lets the bread on the inside get stale and it's a bit sturdier.

💭 Insider tips: things to know

  1. You can bake hot dips right in the bread bowl - just be ready to tent the bowl with aluminum foil if the bread starts to brown too much.
  2. Try using a dark rye bread for the wheels for more contrast.
  3. Dips need to be thick enough that they don't soak through the bread. An olive oil dip won't work. Think cream cheese, sour cream, etc.

👩‍🍳 Let's answer those questions: FAQs

Have other questions? Ask me in the comments!

Can I make this bread bowl for dip with any kind of bread?

You can use any kind of round, crusty bread.

What do I do with the pieces of bread I remove from the boule?

You can use them to dip into the dip or use a blender to make breadcrumbs for other recipes.

⏲️ Marye's time saving hacks -

Making a homemade dip is always good - and I have a lot of great recipes (see below) BUT there's no shame in buying a dip to stick in there, either!

🍽️ Perfect pairings: what to serve with

Here are some dip recipes that are easy, delicious, and will work perfectly in this boule.

Overhead view of onion dip in a blue bowl.

Cream cheese onion dip is so much better when it's made from scratch! Caramelized onions, cream cheese, and garlic make this irresistable.

Overhead view of baked cowboy dip in an iron skillet.

Baked cowboy dip is hearty, hot, and bubbly. If you use this you can bake it right in the bread bowl - you'll want to keep an eye on it and cover with aluminum foil if the bread begins to brown too much.

Overhead view of creamy cranberry jalapeno dip on a snack board.

Cranberry jalapeno dip is so pretty, so festive, and so absolutely delicious that your guests won't be able to stop eating it! It's particularly nice for a princess party since it's pink.

Buffalo chicken dip on a tortilla chip.

Buffalo chicken dip is almost a meal in itself! It's full of chicken breast, creamy bleu cheese, gooey cheddar, and all the other yummy ingredients you'd expect.

Closeup of a pepper being dipped in spinach dip.

Spinach dip is another classic that's cheesy and delish! Most people who think they don't like spinach dip have never had a rich, delicious homemade version.

Closeup image of sausage cheese dip.

Rotel sausage dip is on the football food pyramid but it works perfectly at our princess party, too.

📞 Wrapping it up: the last word

Decorating for a theme party requires imagination and a lot of it. Maybe because I am such a perfectionist, I go overboard, but to me, everything in a theme party should go with the theme, from the colors to the serving dishes.

A princess party just would not be complete without a coach - and what better way to create a coach than with a bread bowl and a dip?

This is easy and it really was a huge hit. So cute.

If you click on the number of servings in the recipe card you can adjust the measurements up or down for the exact number of servings you need.

Ingredients

  • 1 sourdough round bread boule, unsliced
  • 6 slices of white bread
  • 8 ounces dip, your favorite

Instructions

  • The night before you will serve the dip slice a thin layer off of the top of the boule.
  • Pull out the bread, leaving a 1 inch thick wall.
  • Save the bread for breadcrumbs or whatever.
  • Allow the boule to stand uncovered overnight - this helps the soft bread inside to get a little crusty and it won't soak up so much dip when you fill it.
  • Shortly before serving toast 4 pieces of bread.
  • Carefully cut a large circle out of each for the wheels.
  • Toast the other 2 pieces of bread and cut out 2 small circles from each for the hubs.
  • Place the hollow boule on a platter.
  • Place a small circle on a large circle of toast and push a toothpick through the circles and attach them to the boule for wheels.
  • Place the horses at the "front" of the carriage.
  • Tie string around the horses and attach the ends to each side of the coach with toothpicks.
  • Add the dip to the hollowed out center.
  • Add parsley, chives, edible flowers or whatever you like as garnish.

Notes

Storage:
Leftovers? Remove the dip from the bread bowl and refrigerate in an airtight container. Toss the bread - it will just get soggy.
Tips:
  • You can bake hot dips right in the bread bowl - just be ready to tent the bowl with aluminum foil if the bread starts to brown too much.
  • Try using a dark rye bread for the wheels for more contrast.
  • Dips need to be thick enough that they don't soak through the bread. An olive oil dip won't work. Think cream cheese, sour cream, etc.

✍🏻 A note from Marye...

I know y'all don't always like the stories bloggers tell so when I have one I try to put it at the very bottom so you can read or skip as you like.

When I was little I could have cared less about Prince Charming - it was all about the coach and the horses for me. I dreamed of the day when I would arrive somewhere in a coach pulled by sleek, black horses and emerge to admiration and...

Well the fantasy always stopped there.
