🥰 Is this cranberry cheese ball wreath for you?
This easy recipe is perfect for you if:
- You need a Christmas appetizer that looks like you fussed over it... but absolutely did not.
- You love make-ahead recipes that free you up for more important holiday activities, like guarding the cookie tray.
- You like the sweet-and-savory combination of cranberries, sharp cheddar, crunchy pecans, and a little jalapeño kick.
- You're looking for a homemade hostess gift that's a little unexpected and a whole lot more memorable than a bottle of wine.
Skip it if:
- You don't like cream cheese, cranberries, or nuts. This recipe is not about to change your mind.
- Even a little jalapeño sounds too adventurous. (You can leave it out, but it adds great flavor without much heat.)
🧾 Ingredients
Here's everything you'll need to build a Christmas appetizer wreath that's a lot easier than hanging lights and considerably more delicious.

- Cream cheese: The foundation of the mixture. Let it soften first unless you enjoy wrestling with your mixer.
- Dried cranberries: Sweet, tart, and just chewy enough to keep things interesting.
- Jalapeño: Wakes everything up with a little zip. Remove the seeds if you're feeling cautious.
- Fresh chives: A mild onion flavor that keeps the cheese from tasting one-note.
- Pecans: Toasted pecans bring buttery crunch and make the outside of the wreath extra pretty.
- Orange zest: This is the secret ingredient. It makes all the other flavors taste brighter.
- Orange juice: Just enough to loosen the mixture and echo the citrus from the zest.
- Brown sugar: Takes the edge off the cranberries without making the cheese ball taste too sweet.
- Sharp white cheddar: The sharper, the better. It keeps the flavor from disappearing under all that cream cheese.
- Black pepper: Adds a little warmth and keeps the flavors balanced.
- Crackers: Pick sturdy ones. Nobody wants to fish half a cracker out of the cheese ball.
- Fresh rosemary: It turns the cheese ball into a Christmas wreath in about five seconds flat. Don't eat the sprigs unless you're particularly fond of chewing on Christmas trees. 🌲

Easy Cranberry Cheese Ball Wreath
Print Pin Recipe Rate RecipeIngredients
- 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 2 cups sharp white cheddar, shredded
- 1 cup dried cranberries, chopped, divided use
- 1 jalapeño, seeded and finely minced, divided use
- 3 tablespoons chives, or green onion -chopped, divided use
- 1 tablespoon orange juice
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 1 ½ teaspoons dark brown sugar
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 ½ cups pecans, chopped and toasted
- Fresh rosemary sprigs, for garnish
- Crackers, pretzels, or baguette slices for serving
Instructions
- Beat the cream cheese in a large bowl until it's smooth, fluffy.
- Add the cheddar, half the cranberries, half the chives, most of the jalapeño, the orange juice, orange zest, brown sugar, and the black pepper.
- Stir until everything is evenly mixed and gloriously festive.
- Lay out a piece of plastic wrap, then set a small bowl or ramekin (also wrapped) in the center.
- Scoop the cheese mixture around the bowl, shaping it into a ring.
- Wrap the whole thing tightly like it's a secret holiday gift and chill for at least 2 hours, or until firm enough to handle.
- For the coating, combine the remaining cranberries, chives, the rest of the jalapeño, and the chopped pecans in a shallow dish.
- Unwrap your chilled cheese wreath and gently roll it in the mixture, pressing to make sure all that tart-spicy-nutty goodness sticks.
- Transfer the wreath to a serving platter.
- Tuck fresh rosemary sprigs around the base so it looks like something Pinterest would cry over.
- Add crackers, pretzels, or baguette slices, and watch people swarm like holiday-themed locusts.
Notes
- Room-temperature cream cheese blends smoother, fluffier, and way less stubborn.
- Dice the jalapeno tiny. We're talking confetti-level small. Gloves optional… emotional damage from jalapeño hands not optional.
- Chill two hours minimum, overnight is best. A soft wreath will slouch like a tired elf, and we do not tolerate appetizer slouching during the holidays.

🔪 How to make a cranberry cheese ball wreath
The hardest part of this recipe is waiting for it to chill. Everything else comes together faster than red wine on a white tablecloth.

- Beat the softened cream cheese until it's smooth and fluffy. No lumps allowed. This is a cheese ball, not a geology exhibit.
- Mix in the cheddar, half of the dried cranberries, half of the chives, most of the jalapeño, the orange juice, orange zest, brown sugar, and black pepper. Stir until everything is evenly combined.
- Shape the wreath. Lay a large piece of plastic wrap on your work surface and place a small plastic wrap-covered ramekin or bowl in the center. Press the cheese mixture into a ring around it, wrap tightly, and refrigerate until firm.
- Add the finishing touch. Remove the plastic wrap, then gently press the remaining cranberries, chives, jalapeño, and pecans all over the outside until the wreath is completely coated. Garnish with fresh rosemary before serving.
😱 What can go wrong (and how to fix it)
🎄 The cheese ball won't hold its wreath shape.
The mixture is probably too warm. Wrap it up and chill it for 30 to 60 minutes before trying to shape it again.
🎄 It's too hard to spread on crackers.
Chill until firm, then let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before serving for the best texture.
🎄 The coating won't stick.
Pat the pecan and cranberry mixture onto the outside with your hands instead of rolling the wreath through it. A gentle press works much better than brute force.
🎄 The crackers keep breaking.
This is a hearty cheese ball, so choose sturdy crackers instead of thin, delicate ones. Save the fancy wafer crackers for something less substantial.
🎄 The jalapeño is too spicy.
Remove the seeds and membranes before chopping, or simply leave it out if you're serving guests who prefer milder flavors.

🏡 Ideas for gifting this holiday cheese ball wreath
A homemade cheese ball is one of those gifts people actually use instead of politely setting aside until January. Wrap it up, tuck in a box of buttery crackers, and you've got a thoughtful hostess gift that's ready to serve the minute your host opens it.
- Classic Christmas wreath: Shape the cheese ball into a wreath and place it on a wooden cutting board or festive platter. Add a small box of crackers, a cute cheese spreader, and a sprig of fresh rosemary before wrapping everything tightly in plastic wrap.
- Little Christmas tree: Skip the wreath and shape the mixture into a Christmas tree instead. Sprinkle it with chopped pecans and cranberries, then decorate with tiny rosemary sprigs if you're feeling extra festive.
- Ready-to-serve gift: Arrange the cheese ball on a holiday plate, surround it with fresh rosemary and a handful of cranberries, wrap it securely, and tie a ribbon around the whole thing. Add a handwritten tag that says, "Refrigerate until ready to serve."
Skip the scented candle this year. Nobody has ever gathered around the snack table talking about how unforgettable the vanilla bean wax melt was.

I don't know why I never realized that cheese balls don't have to be...balls. I make different types all the time. This is going in the rotation - it will be perfect for the holiday potluck at work. Thank you!!!

How apropos - starting Christmas in July with a "starter"!
Although a bit more work, I could definitely see making this in plastic lined, mini bundt pans, as gifts for friends and neighbors - like the elderly mother and daughter that live down the hall from me, and one of my BFFs and his wife, who enjoy a little late night nibble, while watching the game.
Doing it this way would also allow me to split/tailor the recipe into "has jalapeños", and "doesn't have jalapeños" versions. Perfect!

I made something similar to this recently for 4th of july! I used bell pepper that I grated and chopped (in place of the jalapeno), added bacon, cheddar and gruyere cheese. I shaped it in a log and rolled it into chopped dried cranberries and toasted pecans. it was the first thing to go! your recipe looks so much better than mine which means I am definitely making it for the back to school family get together 💜💜

I love me a good cheese ball. This recipe is a fantastic mix of sweet and savory- something a good and spicy (perhaps a little nutty too) reindeer like Vixen would bring to the party!

This recipe has many of the ingredients I like except for the jalapenos, but appreciate the hint of taking out the seeds to cut down on the heat. I will try on half of cheese ball with seeds and the other half without. I believe Rudolph with his red nose is smart enough to create a Charcuterie Board!
