Pecan Praline Scones

pecan scones

I like scones. I just do. I like them as much as I like cheesecakes because once you have the basic recipe down you can do just about anything with it and it will turn out right.  Foundational recipes just keep me looking good, you know? Sort of like red. I know that no matter what is going on in my life I can put on red lipstick, red nail polish, or a red sweater and the world will suddenly be a better place. Continue reading

Old Fashioned Hoosier Peanut Bars

I have tried every way I can think of to research the beginnings of Hoosier Peanut Bars. The name sounds like something from the 1930s and I found out that a version of the bar cookies were entered into the Pillsbury Bake-Off in 1949 by Edgar Bleeke of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He won, by the way.

My version is based on a recipe from a 1950′s cookbook put out by the Federation of Women’s Clubs, who ever that was. It is a collection of recipes from all over the country and is truly falling apart on me.  I love these old cookbooks. The recipes change from decade to decade and you can see how America’s tastes have changed. I would love to say that they have evolved but in most cases that wouldn’t be true. Continue reading

Camping was something that we did a lot when I was a kid. Living just outside of Philadelphia in the 1960s meant that there were lots of wooded areas and campgrounds close by. I don’t know how it is now, but in 1967 Pennsylvania was still full of wilderness areas.  My parents had an old Airstream trailer and Mom would get it packed up on Friday so we could leave for parts unknown as soon as Dad got home from work.

Old Fashioned Stuffed Bell Peppers

Old fashioned stuffed bell peppers were a staple in our family when I was a kid and they find the way onto my family’s table now. They are an inexpensive comfort food that can be made in the oven, crockpot, or top of stove. There are a lot of variations but here is how I like them.

Stuffed peppers were a year ’round meal in our house. My parents had both reached their teen years during the Great Depression (ever wonder what was so great about it?) and both being from small farms in the extremely fertile “thumb” of Michigan they were both avid gardeners. I honestly think this was the only thing that they had in common. Continue reading

Quick Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf Patties

Bacon-wrapped-meatloaf-patty

July has been one of the busiest, worst, most stressful, hellacious, defeating months on record in this house. It seemed like we moved from problem to problem and drama to drama until here we are, the last day of the month, and everything is caught up, all my deadlines are met, bills are paid, and all is right with the world…finally.

Have you had months like that?

Here’s the thing. Everything that is stressing you out all month long is almost always fixed, handled, or dealt with by the end of the  month. Continue reading
