Snickers Bar Pie

snickers bar pie

I know that I made a S’mores pie not too long ago – and it was delicious if I do say so myself – but I wanted to improve on it and change it up. What could be more delicious that a Snickers?

Exactly. Nothing. Snickers is awesome, unless you’re craving a Milky Way. Continue reading

Old Fashioned Hoosier Peanut Bars

I have tried every way I can think of to research the beginnings of Hoosier Peanut Bars. The name sounds like something from the 1930s and I found out that a version of the bar cookies were entered into the Pillsbury Bake-Off in 1949 by Edgar Bleeke of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He won, by the way.

My version is based on a recipe from a 1950′s cookbook put out by the Federation of Women’s Clubs, who ever that was. It is a collection of recipes from all over the country and is truly falling apart on me.  I love these old cookbooks. The recipes change from decade to decade and you can see how America’s tastes have changed. I would love to say that they have evolved but in most cases that wouldn’t be true. Continue reading

Super-Moist, Super Dark, Chocolate Cupcakes

chocolate cupcakes

I generally don’t like dark chocolate. I know that it is blasphemy for a food writer to admit that horrible thing but let me tell you – I don’t like fish either. I don’t like offal, I don’ t like rare meat, I don’t like anything that I consider icky. So take away my Foodie Card and special secret handshake instructions.

Cake is a different matter entirely. I like the deepest, chocolaty-ist, darkest chocolate cake that you can imagine and I am constantly changing and tweaking recipes to arrive at that place of chocolate perfection.

This chocolate cupcake comes close. Very close. Continue reading

Pecan Praline Cheesecake

My first introduction to cheesecake, at least that I can remember, is the pineapple cheesecakes that my  mom used to buy the Saturday nights it was her and Dad’s turn to host the weekly card game with three other couples. It was the 1960s and getting dressed for dinner, inviting people over to play cards and drink scotch, and serving fancy food was very trendy. I really miss those days. I loved to watch my mom get ready for a party – she seemed to be so much better at it than I am now. She would carefully cut ring bologna, salami, and cheese into uniform size cubes and put them on fancy toothpicks. She’d cut the bakery purchased, pineapple cheesecake into squares and put them on pretty dessert plates with matching coffee cups. Continue reading

Lavender Lemon Meringue Pie

lavender lemon pieA few weeks ago I was invited to participate in a pie party on Facebook, not sure who hosted but I was invited by the ever elegant Laura from Laura’s Best Recipes.  As usual  I am running late getting my post up – it was due by 2 am.

Pastry seems to scare people. I was watching MasterChef last night and the challenge was an apple pie. Most of the participants seemed horrified that they were going to have to make pastry and many of them admitted that they had never made it before. The results were pretty mixed – with some of them making obvious mistakes that resulted in icky crust. Continue reading
