Kahlua and Chocolate Krispie Treats

kahlua-krispies

There are those things that we adore in childhood and then leave behind as we grow and mature. I would guess that most of us don’t play  hopscotch anymore and Koolaide isn’t really on my 5 p.m. priority list.

But Krispie Treats? Now those, THOSE are different. They are as much a part of my life now as they were in 1965. More so because now I have the freedom to make two pans and hide one for myself.

What’s not to like? Sweet, crispie, gooey, easy, fast, and cheap – they embody all that is perfect in a sweet snack food. Except one or two little things. Chocolate and booze.

Well, now you can have both.  Continue reading

Homemade Moon Pies Recipe – Orange Creamsicle Moon Pies

Moon pies are another one of those treats that you probably know very well if you grew up in the South. While Whoopie pies were making the rounds up North we were quietly (and demurely I’m sure) nibbling the chocolate coating off the scalloped edges of Moon Pies. On the veranda. Barefoot. In March.

As far as I can remember they came in three different flavors; banana, strawberry, and chocolate. They were basically a sort of crumbly not-quite-graham cracker cookie sandwich, with marshmallow cream in the middle and coated in a thin coating of chocolate. My personal favorite was the banana. Happy 100th Birthday, Oreos!

Today, March 6, 2012 is the 100th birthday of Oreo Cookies.  I do know a few people that don’t love Oreo cookies – but not many. Oreos have become a cookie icon in their 100 year history. Even I, organics-make-it-yourself freak that I am cannot resist the siren song of the Oreo.

As I was leafing through my blog (can you say that? I mean electronic leafing) I realized that I have numerous recipes that include Oreos as an ingredient. I thought posting a list of the recipes would be a great way to celebrate 100 years of twisting and dunking.  Ready? Continue reading

White Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies

Thumbrpint cookies describe a huge variety of flavors, fillings, and textures but they all have one thing in common. Everyone loves them.
I made these for Valentine’s Day and they were a big hit – but you could make them anytime with plain hershey’s Kisses, Dove chocolate squares, or whatever you like.

The cookie dough is easy to make and flavored with finely chopped white chocolate. Once you have the dough made you just make walnut sized balls and roll them in chopped pecans. Continue reading

Lofthouse Cookies

Lofthouse cookies are a recipe that I have been trying to re-create for most of my adult life. I have so many good memories attached to them that eating them is (in most cases) a guaranteed way to lose the blues.

When I was little we lived just outside of Philadelphia in the smack center of probably one of the most historic areas of the United States. You couldn’t drive a mile without passing stone houses that were built in the 1600s and had witnessed war, peace and everything in-between for over 300 years. I didn’t have to learn about the mules that pulled flatboats along the canals because I visited those canals many times, and viewed the faded trails that the animals trudged along day after day.  History was a living thing to me, sometimes more real than the world I lived in and I escaped to the woods more than once to hunt for arrowheads, musket shells, and other relics of those who had walked those woods before me.
