Y’all, I am so far behind on my reviews and posts that it isn’t even funny. I haven’t even caught you up on what happened in Birmingham in January. I have some awesome Welches coupons to give away, products that you really do need to know about… and more. 2013 has been crazy. It didn’t help that I had another severe kidney infection with 105 fever which landed me in the emergency room with an IV in my arm. I was on bed-rest for another week – and that’s like the fourth time in six months. Then, there was an emotional meltdown over one client going bankrupt and another deciding to go in another direction. Money is tight, for sure. All of that came together to create the biggest stress load that I have had in years.
On the upside I lost the last ten pounds that I wanted to lose. I still plan to lose a bit more but I am at a healthy weight and I can wear a bikini this summer if I want. It’s just that being sick and stressed is not the optimum way to lose weight!
One of the cookbooks that I have been given to review is a clean eating book. Whole-foods recipes that take under 30 minutes to prepare, and lots of tips and information to help you transition to a healthier, clean eating way of life. It has your favorites like chili and stroganoff but there are also innovative dishes like a Greek style Quinoa salad and Grilled Apple Cheddar sandwiches. Many of the pages have side notes that give you information and tips about related environmental issues, seasonal foods, dealing with leftovers, and how- tos.
The front of the book is filled with shopping lists, suggested cooking tools, and how to get your family on the same page as you with this new style of eating.
There are full page, color images throughout the book to help you see how the finished dish is going to look.
Did I like it? Yes, I did. It isn’t a cookbook that I would use all the time – I prefer my classic Whole Foods Cooking by David and Nikki Goldberg. I have used that book since the late 1980s and I like the recipes a lot. Still, there are definitely some super-star recipes in Clean Eating – Shrimp Pad Thai comes to mind.
The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow – that’s a big plus.
If you are looking for a good, basic book to help you get started with clean eating this is a good one because of all the background information that it contains. I will say that the dessert section was not tempting to me at all but I am particular about desserts. I would rather have a rich, gooey unhealthy brownie once a month that whole wheat brownies every week. I have done the whole wheat thing and while I adore whole wheat pasta with some sauces I am not a fan of it in desserts. Just my opinion.
