How to Make an Easy Hippo Birthday Cake

Birthday cakes are a fact of life around here. With 10 kids between Marc and I, a son-in-law, and three grandkids plus various friends we have birthdays nearly every month. Often they happen in multiples. Since my first child’s first birthday I have tried to make each birthday special and unique. Sometimes I don’t do so well and other times I do great – usually it is somewhere between the two.

Erin, my oldest daughter, is often part of the planning – she and I have worked together on parties for so long that it is almost second nature. When we were planning my step-daughter’s party just before Christmas we finally decides on a hippo theme. Christine loves hippos and collects them so it was almost a no brainer. The only problem was how to actually manipulate cake into the shape of a hippo.

I am not Duff Goldman. Nor do I have tons of time to make cakes. With a baked cake you should be able to complete this in about two hours. It took me an hour and a half. Continue reading

Disney Princess Party: Lavender Punch

What is a party with out a punch or two?

Even if you are having a genteel tea there is just something perfect about a vintage punch bowl brimming with a sparkly punch. This punch is surely fit for the Princess in your life and her entire entourage. Made with a sweet lavender syrup, it sparkles with gingerale and teases your tastebuds with tart lemon.  If the party is all adults you can even add some flavored vodka.

The color is a delicate light violet and may vary depending on the lavender buds that you use. If yours seems a little too pale for your taste you can very carefully add a tiny bit of purple food color – and I mean a tiny bit! Continue reading

Not only that but she increasingly requires sprinkles. On everything. We are planning an intervention.

Anyway. It was because of Shi that I thought about buttercream shots – tiny cups of Swiss buttercream with a tiny spoon and sprinkles. No cake. No crust. No cookies. Just buttercream and sprinkles. And a spoon. Continue reading

Disney Princess Birthday or Tea Party: “The Royal Coach” Dip Boule

When I was little I could have cared less about Prince Charming – it was all about the coach and the horses for me. I dreamed of the day when I would arrive somewhere in a coach pulled by sleek, black horses and emerge to admiration and…

Well the fantasy always stopped there.

Decorating for a theme party requires imagination and a lot of it. Maybe because I am such a perfectionist I go overboard but to me everything in a theme party should go with the theme from the colors to the serving dishes. A princess party just would not be complete without a coach – and what better way to create a coach than with a boule and a dip? Continue reading

Disney Princess Birthday or Tea Party: Tea Sandwiches

So, when my oldest daughter turned 30 we decided to give her a party. My son in law and I were joking around and one of us said something about Disney princesses…and all of a sudden it was so. It just seemed perfect. If you knew Erin you would understand why.
