Last weekend when I was in Salado (Texas) I stayed at a fantastic bed and breakfast, The Rose Mansion. There were many things I enjoyed about staying there but the biggest luxury to me was waking up to the smell of someone else fixing breakfast!

Rose Mansion, Salado Texas
What decadence to wander out to the dining room at 9 o clock and plop down to a steaming cup of coffee and a hot breakfast that you didn’t have to fix. I gained 4 pounds from Friday to Monday between the B&B and the restaurants that I visited. I would waddle back to my room and unbutton the jeans with a sigh as I rolled onto the bed. I do mean rolled.

Of all of the breakfasts that our host, Donna, made I was particularly in love with the Apple Dumplings. They had an amazing country flavor and the aroma fairly filled the house. I took the image with my phone because I could not find my chip to my camera… until later. I think you can still see how yummy this looks despite the pitiful image.

I asked Donna if I could share this part of my weekend with you and she agreed. Here is her recipe. This is easy because you use canned crescent rolls. You can finish this in about 45 minutes, including preparation time.
Rose Mansion Apple Dumplings
- 2 Granny Smith Apples, peeled and quartered
- 1 can crescent rolls
- Cinnamon
Simmer together:
- 1 cup orange juice
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3/4 stick of butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
Instructions:
- Separate rolls and sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Roll each piece of apple in a crescent roll and place in a baking pan.
- Pour orange juice mixture over all and sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Bake at 350F for 30 minutes.
Serves 8
If you are going to be in Texas, and have a chance to go there Salado is between Dallas and Austin. I strongly recommend a weekend here. It is the perfect R and R getaway. You can make reservations at the Rose Mansion.
